Shaoran is an intense 10 year old from Hong Kong and a descendant of Clow Reeds. His family is known for their powerful magical abilities. Only Shaoran's cousin Li Meilin has no magical abilities. When Shaoran and his mother learned that the Clow Cards had been released, Shaoran traveled with his guardian Wei to Tokyo to recapture them himself. During most fights, he wears a green ceremonial garment and carries a magical sword.
Because of his Hong Kong origins, Shaoran doesn't do well with reading and writing Japanese. He often has to use a dictionary to help him with words, so of course they are his least favorite school subjects. He excels in sports, like Sakura, so athletic competitions between them are always exciting to watch. Unlike Sakura, however, Shaoran also does well with math.
Shaoran is very intense, quiet and mature for his age. He has a strong sense of loyalty and protects those he cares for. At first he does act cold in some of his reactions to Sakura, but it fades as their rivalry turns to friendship. Before the final judgment, he captures several powerful cards (including Time and Return). He also has elemental magic abilities that he often calls using Ofuda (small papers with spells written on them).
On his arrival, Shaoran immediately finds out that Sakura is capturing the cards. Despite having Kerberos on her side (whom Shaoran calls a stuffed doll because of his diminutive form), Shaoran demands that Sakura give over her cards and let him capture the rest. Her brother sees his attack and stops it, causing Touya and Shaoran to have an intense dislike for each other.
Shaoran dislikes Sakura when they first meet, and says she doesn't know enough and isn't powerful enough to capture all the cards. They start as rivals for the cards, as well as in love for he falls in love with Yukito as soon as they meet. Shaoran later realizes though that he was attracted to Yukito because of his power, not from real love. As he comments when observing Sakura with Mizuki: "Power attracts power."
Once Shaoran's heart is free from confusion, he discovers that Sakura's courage, determination and kind nature have earned not only his respect but his love as well. He keeps his feelings to himself while he deals with his "engagement" to Meilin. He also doesn't want to confuse Sakura because of her feelings for Yukito. Once he does finally tell her how he feels, Sakura doesn't answer immediately. Shaoran, though, is patient and knows that it's because she needs to sort out her own feelings and get past her feelings for Yukito.
